It is JUNE! I mean, it has been for over a week now but you know what I mean. This year has felt like it’s going by so fast and so eternally slow that I don’t know how to feel about it. Before we know it it’ll be September and the year will be pretty much gone. The year 2020 is one that will definitely leave a mark not only in our lives, but in the whole world. Things are happening, people are moving and there is hope that change will happen in our society.
If I’m honest, I’ve always wanted to do a mid-year book freak out tag. They always seem fun! Unfortunately, my reading habits haven’t always been the best and I was not even part of the book community, so sharing this type of stuff seemed weird.
But this is me now, able to share with all of you how my reading year is going and I’m so, so happy! I found these questions on Flipping Thru The Pages post for 2019, so I decided to go with those for this post. There are 20 questions, so buck up!

How much have you read?
I’ve read so much! Most that any other years. My initial goal for the year was to read 15 books, but after I was forced to stay at home that number became too small and I increased it to a total of 30. Now I’ve also reached and surpassed that goal. This is the first time I reach my Goodreads Reading Challenge in years! I’m excited to see how many more books I’ll read by the end of the year.
What have you been reading?
I don’t think I’m deviating from my comfort zone? I did read quite a few more romance-centered books, which are not my usual read. Romance in books is something I struggle a lot with and end up rating them pretty low. Otherwise, I’m sticking with young adult fantasy 😋
Best book you’ve read so far in 2020
Heartstopper by Alice Oseman! This webcomic is the best thing I’ve read so far, it had everything I love in fictional stories. Funny how it is a romance-centered work and it’s my favorite so far. But these volumes caught my heart and have yet to release it. I’m in the middle of getting the physical copies and can’t wait for the 4th volume.
Best sequel you’ve read so far in 2020
I’ve read two sequels so far this year, even though I promised to finish the series I already started, but this one is by far the better. I loved the book, the new characters, the new quest, the new obstacles, everything about it was amazing. I knew what happened at the end, but didn’t know it happened in this book, so it was still a surprise. So excited to read the rest of the series!
New release you haven’t read yet, but want to
Um? Quite a few? There’s just not enough time to read all the new releases while trying to bring down my TBR while also reading arcs and such, y’know? There are quite a few but some that I’m still quite upset I haven’t gotten to are the ones above. The Midnight Lie would still be there because Book Depository has YET TO SHIP MY COPY? But I got the ebook and it’s one I’m currently reading!
Most anticipated release for the second part of the year
I’ve been dying for The Invisible Life of Addie Larue ever since it was announced! I tried to get a review copy on both Netgalley and Edelweiss with no success, I can’t wait for it to be released. I’ve only read one book from V.E. Schwab, but the synopsis is that enticing. Also seeing how Victoria refers to this book as THE book makes me even more excited to read it.
This is the book that jumps to my mind when I think of my biggest disappointment. It’s not even the book with the lowest rating I’ve given! But it certainly felt like I was expecting more from Havenfall than the other books with lower ratings. It just felt like the character was lacking. I wrote a review and mentioned this several times, you can find it here.
This is a book that I had average expectations on and ended up being one of my favorites so far. This is a romance centered book, therefore it was one I wanted to read mostly to get out of my comfort zone and try to read more romance heavy books. Turns outs, Tweet Cute took over my life. I read it in like two days and gave me a severe case of a book hangover, I couldn’t pick up another book because the feeling of this bad boy had me flying. It’s such a cute story, a LOT of things happen but it was something that I enjoyed and LOVED. You can read my review where I mostly ramble about how CUTE THIS IS HERE.
New favorite author (debut or new to you)
So I’ve never read the Percy Jackson series before, even though I’ve wanted to for a while. I finally picked up The Lightning Thief from my shelf, where it has been sitting since last year. I ended up loving it! So now I’m waiting for my boxed set to arrive so I can continue reading the next books. One reason why it took me so long to pick it up is that I know it doesn’t end in this series, but a friend told me that the books are rather short throughout the series. And so, after the news that there would be a new adaption in Disney+ where Rick Riordan would be taking part in the actual team, I finally started the journey through the Riordanverse!
Underrated gems you’ve discovered recently
I don’t really know how much of an underrated gem this is because I know Marie Lu is a popular author, but I don’t see people talking about this book. I’ve only read Legend because a coworker was going to lend me the books, but I haven’t seen him since we started working from home, so… But t this book was amazing; the dystopian setting, the political issues, the high stakes. Everything was amazing and I wish more people were talking about it in the community?
Rereads this year
I started to reread the book in April for a group read-along on Twitter, and I fell waaaay behind. Then in May I participated in a read-a-thon and decided to continue reading this in June. I finally received my physical copy after so long, I now have the duology looking pretty in my shelf. Six of Crows is one of my favorite books ever, but the slow pace takes a toll on me and it’s hard to get on the groove, but I will finish it by the end of the month or else!
Newest fictional crush
VATAEA OH VATAEA. I loved her the moment she appeared and I knew I would even before she did. Vataea is a mermaid that helps Amora and the crew to get to the final destination on the book, she was kidnapped by an inlander that used her to bring customers to his business and well… she is not fond of people. She has a fierce personality and doesn’t hesitate to use everything she has when the crew is in a pinch. I can’t wait to see more of her in All the Tides of Fate.
Newest favorite character
Hope y’all don’t mind that I’m repeating books here, but I couldn’t leave out my boy Grover. I LOVED HIM so much, he was witty and sweet and I can’t wait to see more about him. He was a character that I liked from the beginning, ever since he played Hilary Duff on the pipes. He is so brave and I want the best for him, so I hope he finds Pan. I haven’t read the other books so please don’t tell me if he does omg
Book that made you cry
Heartstopper made me happy cry! Although I did tear up a little after Nick left Charlie after kissing at the party and when I read about Charlie’s relationship with Ben. It gave me so many feels, I couldn’t help but get a little emotional a few times. It was mostly happy crying though.
Book that made you happy
Because I don’t want to keep repeating Heartstopper, another book that made me very happy was this BL manga. Like I said in my review, I hadn’t read a BL manga in so long because of how problematic they tend t be. However, Koimonogatari is so wholesome and full of great friendships. I haven’t gotten into the romantic bit yet, but I love the characters and the way the themes are being handled. It made me so happy I want to continue reading the rest of the manga!
Favorite book to film adaptation
I can’t believe I’m saying this but I haven’t watched many movies all year? Mom usually watches a lot of Netflix films while we’re in the same room but I just don’t like watching movies very much. I’m more of a series type of person.
Most beautiful cover you’ve bought this year (or received)
Romanov is probably my favorite cover from the books I’ve bought this year. It’s even prettier in person because it shines! I love the details on the cover and the illustrations. This is a copy I received recently, and guess what? It’s printed upside down and backward! 🤣 But that makes me love it even more, it’s unique!
What books do you need to read by the end of the year
This year the goal is to reduce my TBR a little. Note that I’m already failing because I keep adding books to my TBR and buying books that were not EVEN THERE IN THE FIRST PLACE. Still, the books above are ones that I certainly want to read by the end of the year. Especially A Gathering of Shadows, I’ve had that book on my shelf so years now and I finally got A Conjuring of Light so I can finish the trilogy. I read A Darker Shade of Magic so long ago that I’m tempted to read the whole thing again.
Favorite post you have done this year
Well, I don’t have much to say, I can’t say my blog posts have been overall something to be proud off? As they’re mostly reviews and memes that I enjoy doing. However, one that I enjoyed doing was my first book haul 20 Kindle Books I’ve Bought During Quarantine. I found it very entertaining to put together, even though I was also terrified when seeing how many books I had bought!
